$4.3-Million Settlement OKd in LAPD Bias Case
The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday approved a $4.3-million settlement with John A. Francois, who alleged that he was subjected to racial harassment and discrimination as the first African American on the Los Angeles Police Department’s elite bomb squad.
After Francois was awarded $5.34 million by a Superior Court jury in October 2000, the city vowed to challenge the verdict.
Wednesday’s settlement was approved in closed session, and city officials declined to comment under terms of the agreement, a spokeswoman said. A phone call to Francois’ attorney was not returned.
