Frustrated Owner Lists Sand Creek Land for Sale
A rancher who owns a key section of land in Eads designated for the Sand Creek Massacre Historic Site says he’s fed up with the government’s efforts to buy his land and will sell to the highest bidder.
William Dawson wants $1.5 million for his 1,465 acres. The government has offered him $332,000.
“That price is so low I could sell it to either of my two neighbors for more,” said Dawson, who supports preserving the site.
Without the land, it won’t be possible to establish the 12,500-acre memorial, said Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.).
The Sand Creek Massacre was one of the worst in the West. A cavalry unit attacked a sleeping village Nov. 29, 1864, killing more than 150 Cheyenne and Arapaho. Most were women, children and elderly men.
