Russell Crowe, Halle Berry Win Top SAG Awards
Russell Crowe was named best male actor in a leading role for a theatrical motion picture for “A Beautiful Mind,” and Halle Berry was voted best female actor for “Monster’s Ball” at the eighth annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night. Berry is the first African American to win a SAG award in a leading actor category.
Of the 14 previous SAG winners in the leading actor categories, 11 have gone on to receive the Academy Award, including Julia Roberts last year for “Erin Brockovich.”
Sir Ian McKellen received the nod for supporting male actor for his role in the fantasy “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” and Helen Mirren took the honor for supporting female actor for “Gosford Park.”
“Gosford Park” also won the award for best ensemble of a theatrical motion picture.
In TV categories, NBC swept both dramatic and comedy series actors awards, with Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally winning best male and female actor for the sitcom “Will & Grace,” and Martin Sheen and Allison Janney picking up best male and female actor for the drama “The West Wing,” which also was singled out for best drama ensemble.
The SAG Awards were presented during a two-hour ceremony telecast on TNT on Sunday evening from the Shrine Exposition Hall. Two randomly selected panels representing 4,200 SAG members selected this year’s nominees; about 98,000 guild members voted for the winners.
The Academy Awards will be March 24 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.
