Outside Counsel Quits, May Run for Senate
Independent counsel Robert W. Ray, who is considering a run for the Senate, resigned less than a week after the release of his final report on his investigation of former President Clinton in the Monica S. Lewinsky sex scandal.
“During the course of my tenure, with the help of my colleagues, we have done our best to be thorough and fair,” Ray said in his resignation letter. Ray, who succeeded Kenneth W. Starr, served for nearly 29 months.
A spokeswoman for Ray said he may run for the Senate against incumbent Robert Torricelli (D-N.J.).
