Quest Software Inc., whose products speed database programs, said Wednesday it acquired BB4 Technologies Inc., a Montreal-based maker of the Big Brother System and Network Monitor that detects Web site problems. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

Shares of Irvine-based Quest closed at $20.01, off 10 cents, in Nasdaq trading.

* Quiksilver Inc. said net income for the first quarter fell 16% to $3.1 million, or 13 cents a share, as it marked down prices because of a weak economy and fallout from the Sept. 11 attacks. Sales rose 20% to $145.8 million.
