130 Teachers Notified They Might Lose Jobs

From Times Staff Reports

Projecting a $5.2-million budget shortfall for the next school year, the Irvine Unified School District mailed more than 130 notices Wednesday telling teachers they may not be rehired.

State law requires school districts to give notice to teachers whose continued employment is not guaranteed.

Temporary staff usually receive such notices each year because their jobs are contingent on funding, school board Trustee Steven Choi said. This year many full-time teachers also are on the list.

The number of layoffs will be determined later.

The board voted in January to cut more than $5 million from programs, such as science and arts instruction and class-size reduction initiatives.
