Officials Study Ways to Halt Wave of Sex Crimes
From Times Wire Reports
New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said that police are devising plans to counter a marked increase in rapes.
Police reported that 50 women were raped in the city from March 4 to March 10, compared with 21 over the same period last year. There have been 354 reported rapes since Jan. 1, which is 30 more than in the same period in 2000.
Bloomberg said the increase was “counter-trend,” as all other crime categories have been on the decline.
