First Half

What happened: Mostly bad stuff for the Trojans. They were fortunate they were behind only 37-28, because it could have been worse than that. You name it, it happened ... early foul trouble for Sam Clancy, poor team defense, inadequate shot selection, poor ballhandling. Henry Bibby had to sit there with a really pained expression on his face, as though he had been forced to down one of those shards of mushy red stuff they sold as hot dogs at the concession stands. As Tom Hansen, the Pacific 10 commissioner, commented at halftime: “There’s no next week if you don’t get it done now.” Actually, Tom, there will be a next week and a tournament, it’s just that it was starting to look as if neither one would include the Trojans.

Not in the box score: What happened to the Trojan team that performed so well in the Pac-10 tournament last week? The hustle and poise that led to victories over Stanford and Oregon apparently were left at Staples Center. Perhaps the Trojans should have spent more time thinking about the Seahawks than about a possible third-round matchup with Duke.

Winning number: That would be 51.7% shooting from the floor by the Seahawks (15 for 29).

Wrong number: There are actually two--35% shooting (11 for 31) by the Trojans; and two fouls by Clancy.
