Microsoft Corp. launched its Xbox game console across Europe last week, completing the third and last leg of its entry into the $20-billion-a-year video game industry.

The gaming machine already is for sale in the United States and Japan, with a global marketing budget of $500 million. It pits Microsoft against established Japanese game companies Sony Corp. and Nintendo Co.

Microsoft said the Xbox launch went smoothly across Europe, where retailers threw open their doors at midnight to sell it.

Microsoft declined to specify demand in Europe but reiterated it expected to ship between 4.5 million and 6 million boxes worldwide by the end of June. The Xbox will retail for $423 in Britain and $422 in other parts of Europe.
