Cats Are Practical Library Companions

Share

Regarding “In the Wonderland of Libraries Are Cats Like Alis” (Feb. 18): The symbiotic relationship between cats and libraries goes back to medieval times at least.

In the days when manuscripts were hand-copied on parchment, mice could decimate a library’s irreplaceable collection and cats were therefore a necessity.

Cats and books go together for the St. Ambrose Book Group as well. My Siamese, Lucy Monkeygirl, eagerly awaits the second Monday of each month at my house. For her the chairs placed around the circle signal the day of the meeting. She greets the members as they arrive but knows well that she’s not permitted to disturb the discussion. She selects a chair near me or one of her favorites and stays contentedly until the end. We cherish her as our “literate cat” and honorary member.
