$3.2 Million Stolen From Heathrow
Robbers stole more than $3 million from a van Tuesday at Heathrow Airport in the second major theft there since heavy security measures were imposed after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States.
British government ministers demanded an urgent report from airport operator BAA PLC, which is responsible for stopping unauthorized personnel from getting into restricted zones.
The robbers entered a restricted area where airplanes are parked early Tuesday and confronted the driver of an armored van at knifepoint just after the $3.2 million in cash was unloaded from a South African Airways jet, Scotland Yard said.
It said two young men forced the driver to take them to Cranford, about two miles away, and then drove off with the cash in another vehicle. The driver was not hurt.
