What: “Adventure Quest: Egypt Mountain Bike Exodus”

Where: Outdoor Life Network, tonight, 9 p.m.

Hans Rey regards his mountain bike as a passport with pedals and he looks at the world “as one big obstacle course to conquer.”

Tonight, the passport has been stamped in Egypt and the obstacle course is the rugged Sinai Peninsula and its namesake peak. Rey will follow in the footsteps of Moses, climbing the Steps of Repentance to the summit where God is said to have delivered the Ten Commandments.

Then Rey will become the first to make bicycle tracks over those footsteps, bouncing down all 3,000 of the steps, not stopping until he reaches the Red Sea. After which the former world champion will take a well-deserved plunge.

His is an entertaining Egyptian odyssey, to be sure. Rey is a personable showman who gives viewers a glimpse into the Bedouin culture and lifestyle from a unique perspective: the eyes of a man whose philosophy is to “look at a landscape like an artist and complement what I see with my riding.”

Though there is some ceremonious bouncing along in front of the ancient pyramids and some showing off in the bustling Cairo marketplace, there also is some incredible trials-style riding over some of the most rugged and spectacular terrain imaginable.

Indeed, everyone he passed along the way seemed genuinely impressed by his ability to negotiate such a seemingly unridable landscape--everyone, of course, but the camels.
