* UAL Corp.’s United Airlines joined other carriers in saying it no longer would pay base commissions for tickets to travel agents in the United States and Canada.
* Contract negotiations between United Airlines and its 23,000 ramp and public contact workers broke off. The union asked federal mediators to formally declare an impasse, clearing the way for a possible strike.
* America West Holdings Corp., an airline company that hasn’t made a profit since mid-2000, said it will have first-quarter costs of as much as $347 million for restructuring, lower plane values and an accounting change.
* Chiquita Brands Inc. said Chief Executive Steven Warshaw resigned after leading the banana producer through a Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization. Warshaw was replaced by Cyrus Freidheim, 66, who is retiring as vice chairman of Booz Allen & Hamilton Inc. at the end of the month.
* International Paper Co. and Weyerhaeuser Co., the world’s biggest papermakers, plan to increase the price of paper used in copy machines and books by about 5%, the first sign of increasing demand, analysts said. Domtar Inc. and Boise Cascade Corp. also plan to increase the price of uncoated paper.
* Guidebook publisher Lonely Planet said it planned to cut 75 jobs, or 15% of its work force, citing slumps in travel and the global economy as well as the high cost of doing business in the San Francisco Bay Area. Most of the cuts will be made at the firm’s U.S. operations in Oakland, as the company consolidates production at its headquarters in Australia.
