Group Says It Killed Italian Economist
An offshoot of the Red Brigades terror group said Thursday that it killed an Italian economist working on bitterly contested changes in Italy’s labor laws. The group also said the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States were a model of effective terrorism.
A 26-page communique portrayed the slaying of economist Marco Biagi as part of a global struggle against what the group called “imperialism.” The document drew no links between the Italian group and the Al Qaeda terrorists held responsible for the attacks on New York and the Pentagon.
Biagi was gunned down Tuesday night outside his home in Bologna by two men on a motorbike.
A 52-year-old university professor, Biagi advocated loosening Italy’s labor market, one of the most rigid in Europe.
The original Red Brigades were responsible for a slew of killings of politicians, businessmen and policemen in the 1970s and early 1980s.
