Gov. Rick Perry gave a condemned inmate a 30-day reprieve Thursday evening, moments before the killer was to be executed, prison officials said.

The governor’s office said it was responding to a request from San Antonio police, who want to talk to Rodolfo Hernandez about some unsolved slayings in their area.

The Texas governor has the authority to issue a onetime 30-day reprieve.

Hernandez, 52, was condemned for robbing and shooting five undocumented Mexican immigrants in March 1985 near San Antonio. One of the men died.

Hernandez gained notoriety as Texas’ one-legged condemned killer because his health blocked him from being fitted with the artificial limb he wanted so he could walk to the death chamber.
