Dig This: New Museum for Anglo-Saxon Artifacts
- Share via
Treasures from one of England’s most important archeological sites are displayed at a $7-million museum that opened this month at Sutton Hoo, near Woodbridge in Suffolk County. The items were recovered from a 1,400-year-old Anglo-Saxon burial mound at Sutton Hoo that has been under excavation since 1939.
A full-size reconstruction of the burial chamber, which was formed from a ship that was buried underground, is a highlight of the new museum. London’s British Museum, which houses excavated items, has lent some of them to the new museum. Objects include a sword and shield believed to have belonged to warrior-king Raedwald; a warrior’s helmet; gold ornaments; and Byzantine silver.
The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday through May 31, daily in summer. Fee: about $5. 011-44-1394-389-700, www.nationaltrust.org.uk.
