From Staff and Wire Reports

East Bay counties again have been listed among the top destinations for legal immigrants to the U.S., outranking the San Francisco area.

The Oakland metropolitan area, which includes all of Alameda and Contra Costa counties, ranked 10th on the Immigration and Naturalization Service’s list of areas where immigrants said they planned to live in fiscal year 2000. It outranked the San Francisco area, which includes San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties.

The largest number of immigrants came from Mexico, followed by China, the Philippines, India and Vietnam, according to the report.

The INS didn’t have a breakdown of where the East Bay’s immigrants came from, although the 2000 U.S. Census shows huge gains in the area’s Asian and Latino populations, probably through both immigration and births.
