Cardiac Science Files Suit Against Zoll Medical

Cardiac Science Inc. said it filed a lawsuit accusing rival Zoll Medical Corp. of stealing its patented ideas for heart defibrillators.
Zoll said Tuesday it received Food and Drug Administration approval for an automated external defibrillator that can be used by people such as lifeguards, flight attendants and security guards. Cardiac Science claims Zoll’s new defibrillator uses technology covered by two Cardiac Science patents.
Cardiac Science wants damages and a court to block further sale of any products that infringe the patents. Shares of Burlington, Mass.-based Zoll fell $1.30 to $38.40, and shares of Irvine-based Cardiac Science rose 2 cents to $3, both on Nasdaq.
