At least 27 people were wounded when a bomb believed to have been planted by Maoist guerrillas exploded in Katmandu, the Nepalese capital, authorities said.

A Defense Ministry statement said three soldiers and 24 civilians, including children, were wounded in the blast, which occurred near a bridge in a residential area of the city during the morning rush hour.

Elsewhere, soldiers shot dead 12 rebels in gun battles over a 24-hour period, a ministry spokesman said.
