Grand Architect
To add one more amazing woman to your story (“Conquering the Grand Canyon,” April 14): Mary Colter created the beautiful Phantom Ranch. Twenty years before American women could vote, Colter began her work in the Wild West. The Grand Canyon is the perfect place to learn about this great architect’s fierce determination, exacting standards and take-no-prisoners sense of humor. She designed Hopi House, Watchtower, Hermit’s Rest and the Lookout Studio, and they are accessible to South Rim visitors without hiking.
