Background: ASHA is a professional association of more than 100,000 speech, language and hearing therapists and researchers. Its Web site is meant to help people with speech and hearing problems understand what ASHA members do, and help them find the most effective therapy.

What Works: This site addresses communication problems of most any kind: age-related hearing loss; delayed speech development in young kids; problems due to oral cancers, stroke, stuttering. Each cause demands different kinds of attention, and ASHA spells this out. The site also has a good myth/fact page on hearing aids, and advice on how family members can communicate with a child or parent with a speech or hearing problem. The site comes up short in providing evidence for these various therapies, so it’s hard for consumers to know exactly what kind of improvement to expect, but it gives a good idea of what services are out there.
