Rebel in Aceh Slain on Heels of Talks
Indonesian police shot and killed a top rebel from Aceh province, less than 24 hours after the government agreed to work toward a cease-fire with the separatist guerrillas.
Independent sources and police said Ayah Sofyan, a regional commander in the Free Aceh Movement, was killed in a village near Banda Aceh, the provincial capital.
The Center of Information for the Aceh Referendum, a group seen as supporting separatism, said Sofyan was ambushed.
Indonesian government negotiators and the exiled rebel leadership had agreed in Geneva to work toward ending bloodshed.
