A 60-year-old Oregon man shot himself to death in the frontyard of an Oxnard home after holding three adults and a 4-month-old baby hostage and refusing orders from SWAT team members and hostage negotiators to surrender, authorities said Sunday.

The identification of the man was withheld pending notification of his family, Deputy Medical Examiner Mike Feiler said.

Police said the man walked out of the house in the 1000 block of Denver Place just before 8 a.m. Saturday after holding his ex-wife and three others hostage since Friday afternoon. Authorities said telephone negotiations with the man had gone on through the night.

He talked briefly with SWAT officers as he held a handgun to his head before shooting himself, said Cmdr. Tom Chronister.

The man was taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead a short time later.
