Broken Parking Meters Costing City, Audit Says

From Times Staff Reports

Los Angeles is losing millions of dollars because 10% of its parking meters don’t work, according to an audit by City Controller Laura Chick released Thursday.

The meters are capable of functioning at a 2% failure rate, but lack of timely maintenance increased the number of broken meters fivefold. Cutting the number of inoperable meters by half would generate $1 million for city coffers annually. The analysis also showed that 96% of the vehicles parked at expired meters were not cited, creating more lost revenue.

“With an ever-tightening budget, I know that we could put those funds to good use for our communities and neighborhoods,” Chick wrote in a letter to Mayor James K. Hahn.
