Condo Assn. Told to Pay Dog’s Disabled Owners
A state agency has ordered a condominium association to pay $18,000 for refusing to let a dog live with its disabled owners.
The Fair Employment and Housing Commission found that the Auburn Woods I Homeowners’ Assn. discriminated against Ed and Jayne Elebiari for not letting them keep Pookie, a terrier mix, as a companion animal.
The couple said they suffered from severe depression, and after Jayne Elebiari rescued Pookie from a shelter in 1999, their health improved. Ed Elebiari has been disabled since 1992, when he was involved in an automobile accident that required three brain surgeries.
