Judge Takes a Swing at Golf Ball Diver’s Term

A Briton who was sentenced to six months in prison for stealing lost balls from golf course lakes had his sentence overturned when a judge ruled that the punishment was disproportionate to the crime.
Police caught John Collinson and a helper with 1,158 balls dredged from a lake on the Whetstone Golf Club in central England.
A golf club official said the street value of the two sacks of balls could range from $70 to $700, depending on the balls’ condition.
