WASHINGTON, D.C.

Democrats Consider

Later Convention Date

Democrats are considering moving their 2004 national convention to a later date after learning Republicans plan to hold their gathering in late August or early September.

It’s a scheduling dance aimed at getting the most mileage out of a convention in the polls and making the best use of federal campaign money that becomes available to both sides after nominees are chosen.

Maria Cardona, a spokeswoman for the Democratic National Committee, said “the fact that the Republicans are looking at these late dates” prompted Democrats to consider starting their meeting on Aug. 30. “We are looking at all of our options,” she said.
