WorldCom Inc., the telephone company seeking to raise $5 billion in new financing from banks, may shed its wireless unit.

In a letter that was addressed to some sales agents and obtained by the San Francisco Chronicle, WorldCom said it plans to stop signing up new wireless customers.

“The company has decided that the wireless resale business is not consistent with its core strategic business interests, and that WorldCom Wireless will not be playing a role in the company’s long-term plans,” the letter said.
