Turn L.A. Convention Center Into School Site
Re the L.A. Convention Center: Why are we struggling to enhance the moribund Convention Center with a football stadium to be used perhaps one-sixth of the year? Why are we trying to compound the mistake by building a hotel to service this white elephant? I suggest that L.A. tear down the failed Convention Center and build a school on the site. There might even be room for two schools.

Mayor James Hahn is busy giving away my tax dollars to the NFL and yet he’s going to travel around the Valley, extolling the virtues of a united Los Angeles? He’d better not try that in my neighborhood. His limo would disappear in one of the potholes and he’d never be seen again.

I was interested in the letter regarding rent control should the Valley split from Los Angeles to form a new city (May 24). This is a prime issue to those who cannot afford rent increases. Another point: As a retiree I read a great deal. Usually I have five to eight books checked out of the main L.A. library. This library is the finest I have ever encountered, and to be denied its use or charged a fee for its use would be a great hardship for me. Why try to fix something which is not broken?

Now that I can vote on Valley secession, I have some questions: If the Valley becomes a “new city,” does that mean we residents won’t have to endure the excessive heat in the summer? Will the hot air blow south to L.A.? Will Valley traffic congestion disappear and go south too? And will I be assured that Valley tax dollars never benefit those “poor” people in L.A.? God forbid!
My career in sales required that I travel all over the L.A. Basin. What fun it was, because each area had its own personality and charm. I met energetic, gracious people and enjoyed the diversity. How fortunate I am to be part of the great city of Los Angeles.
