The Justice Department launched a program Thursday to encourage more people to volunteer their time to local police departments.

The Volunteers in Police Service program, known as VIPS, is part of the Citizen Corps proposed by President Bush in his State of the Union address. Citizen Corps encourages Americans to become more involved in domestic defense.

Volunteers are encouraged to help police by answering phones, compiling criminal data, preparing incident reports and working in crime prevention programs.
