Don’t Let the Getty Be a Noisy Neighbor

Most of us agree that the Getty Villa museum is a gem, and we look forward to the reopening so we can again enjoy its many treasures (“Getty Villa a Gem for Us All,” editorial, Oct. 27). My issue is not with the museum but with the outdoor theater designed for up to 950 occupants for day and night performances, with amplified sound and lighting. I’m not alone in my concern. Every homeowners organization in the area shares the concern, and they have joined in opposition to this inappropriate expansion in a residential neighborhood.

We have attempted to negotiate with the Getty, but from day one it has said this is nonnegotiable. It is only the L.A. City Council that has placed some restrictions on use, not the Getty. Its latest “offer,” you ask? Let us do everything we want and give us your land at the entrance to your neighborhood to pay our lawyer fees. Doesn’t sound like much of a gem to me.
