Bratton Is Urged to Hire Blacks in High Positions

From Times Staff Reports

African American leaders called on new LAPD Chief William J. Bratton on Thursday to appoint black commanders to high-ranking positions to ensure that the department does not “go backwards” in efforts to diversify, said Los Angeles Urban League President John Mack.

None of the members of the new chief’s transition team are African American, and two of the department’s highest-ranking black officers, Deputy Chief Willie L. Pannell and Assistant Chief Julius Isaac Davis, have said they will retire.

After meeting with Urban League members Thursday, Bratton made no specific pledge but said that “an appreciation of diversity” would factor into his selections.
