A retired FBI agent and his girlfriend died early Tuesday after the man apparently shot her and then himself in the San Juan Capistrano mobile home they shared, authorities said.

They were identified as Reneau Franklin Kinsey, 67, and Delores Jayne Ulrich, 70, who investigators said had been living together for eight years.

“We don’t know what happened” to cause the shooting, said Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Neighbors in the mobile home park in the 32300 block of Alipaz Street called police about 6:15 a.m. after hearing three shots coming from the couple’s unit.

When officers arrived, Amormino said, they found both dead in the bedroom.

“He apparently shot her twice with a handgun, then shot himself with a shotgun,” Amormino said.

Though neighbors told investigators that the couple had been having problems lately and that Ulrich was planning to leave Kinsey, Amormino said the motive is under investigation.

“We’ve never responded to domestic violence calls there in the past,” he said. “People [in the park] are totally devastated by this tragedy.”

According to Amormino, neighbors described Ulrich as a popular gardener and artist who had painted murals inside the mobile home park’s clubhouse and spa area.

Kinsey, he said, retired from the Riverside office of the FBI in 1988 and, more recently, may have worked as a private investigator.

“We think they were his private weapons,” Amormino said of the firearms used in the shootings. “These stories are always sad, especially around the holidays.”
