* General Motors Corp. said it is recalling 1.5 million model-year 1996 to 1998 cars and minivans to repair the steering unit, which in some instances could lose power. GM said it had 15 reports of crashes as a result of problems with the power steering, including three injuries but no fatalities.

* Advanced Micro Devices Inc. will cut 2,000 jobs, or 15% of its work force, by the end of June as the computer-chip maker tries to align its costs with falling sales. AMD notified about 1,000 employees they’ll be fired, a spokesman said. The remainder will receive word by June.

* Dole Food Co. said Chief Executive David Murdock extended his $2.5-billion takeover offer for the company. The $29.50-a-share offer was continued to Dec. 4.

* Sprint Corp. will fire 2,100 more workers at its Sprint PCS wireless division after the cellular-telephone company lost customers and replaced its president.

* As expected, James Brown, Adelphia Communications Corp.’s former vice president of finance, pleaded guilty to fraud charges, implicating former chief John Rigas and his two sons in an alleged scheme to fool the public about the cable-television operator’s finances. Brown pleaded guilty to conspiracy, securities fraud and bank fraud and admitted that he had agreed with Rigas family members to make false statements about Adelphia’s earnings.

* Barr Laboratories Inc. said the Department of Health and Human Services requested documents related to a study the drug maker uses to market its Cenestin hormone replacement therapy.
