Singer Michael Jackson issued an apology for dangling his barefoot baby son out of a fourth-floor hotel window in Germany on Tuesday, shocking fans around the world at what appeared to be a reckless stunt.

“I offer no excuses for what happened. I made a terrible mistake. I got caught up in the excitement of the moment. I would never intentionally endanger the lives of my children,” Jackson said in a statement issued in Los Angeles.

The statement confirmed that the baby, who Jackson held briefly over a metal railing, its head covered in a towel, was the singer’s new son. It said Jackson showed the baby to fans outside his Berlin hotel window “in response to some fans’ request to see Michael’s new son.”
