Strikes Cripple Air, Train and Bus Service
From Times Wire Reports
Strikes by French air traffic controllers and transport workers grounded most flights and crippled rail and bus service, creating havoc as civil servants held a nationwide walkout.
Tens of thousands of public employees marched in Paris, many lighting flares that formed huge clouds of smoke. “All together! Yes!” they chanted.
The protests are a major challenge for the five-month-old government of Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, which wants to sell off the state’s stake in many French companies to raise cash.
