Mexico City’s mayor lowered the national flag to half-staff and activists headed to the streets to commemorate the 34th anniversary of a massacre of student demonstrators. Dozens of marchers were arrested for vandalism and acts of violence.

Mayor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador declared a day of mourning to remember students who were shot down by government security forces during a largely peaceful demonstration in Tlatelolco Plaza. The government claimed that about 24 died, but historians have put the number at 300.
