Cornerback Rideaux Needs to Stand Tall

Share

USC cornerback Darrell Rideaux is looking forward to facing No. 17 Washington State on Saturday at Martin Stadium where the No. 18 Trojans have not played since 1999.

Rideaux, a freshman at the time, recorded a career-high nine tackles in a 31-28 victory.

Three years later, Rideaux is part of a secondary that ranks first in the nation in pass defense. The 5-foot, 9-inch senior expects a major test from Washington State quarterback Jason Gesser, who will be passing to 6-6 wide receiver Mike Bush and 6-3 flanker Devard Darling.

Said Rideaux: “I’m not worried because we work against 6-5 Mike Williams in practice every day and, over the last four weeks, we’ve developed some schemes to deal with height stuff.

Senior wide receiver Kareem Kelly, who is second on USC’s career receptions list, ranks third this season behind junior flanker Keary Colbert and freshman wide receiver Mike Williams.

Colbert has 23 catches, Williams 16 and Kelly 14.

Quarterback Carson Palmer said there isn’t a pecking order once the game begins.

“You can’t predetermine what player you’re going to go to--it slows down the offense and takes you out of your rhythm,” Palmer said. “You just get the ball to whoever is open. You’re not looking at faces or numbers.”

Defensive end Omar Nazel did not practice again because of a sore shoulder but will play against Washington State.... Left tackle Jacob Rogers (right knee sprain) took part in most drills and will start on Saturday.... Receiver Grant Mattos (abdominal strain) made it through the entire practice and will play Saturday, Carroll said. Receiver Jason Mitchell (stress fracture in back) is doubtful.
