Miami’s Coker May Discipline Two Starters

Tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. and fullback Kyle Cobia of No. 1 Miami may not start Saturday against Connecticut because of unspecified violations of team policy, Coach Larry Coker said Thursday.

In other news: A report in the Memphis Commercial Appeal said Tennessee Coach Phillip Fulmer is upset that the NCAA, which has tracked graduation rates since 1984, reported that only 8% of his 1995 recruiting class had graduated. The NCAA allows six years for students to complete a degree program, and Fulmer said students who leave early to play in the NFL or transfer drag down the graduation rate. “The NCAA system is really not a valid measuring stick,” he said.... The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that an NCAA investigator has interviewed five Palmetto High teachers, the Williamston, S.C. school’s football coach and the principal regarding alleged rules violations involving South Carolina’s recruitment of running back Derek Watson. The paper reported last month that Watson was driving a $62,000 Cadillac Escalade only months before enrolling at South Carolina.

During an interview with a Birmingham, Ala., radio station, former Auburn coach Pat Dye, a Georgia graduate, said he expects No. 22 Alabama to defeat the No. 6 Bulldogs because “I don’t believe Georgia’s man enough to beat Alabama.” Dye didn’t stop there, saying, “Alabama is gonna line up and run the football and they’re gonna play defense and I don’t believe Georgia is man enough to beat that.” .... Kansas State Coach Bill Snyder said Ell Roberson will start at quarterback Saturday against Colorado. Roberson was impressive in relief of Marc Dunn in the Wildcats’ victory over USC.
