Gov. George Pataki won the endorsement of former Democratic governor Hugh L. Carey.

“I’m proud of the job Gov. Pataki has done and believe he’s the best choice to lead us through the challenges we face ahead,” Carey said at a Manhattan news conference with the incumbent governor.

“He has been a master at managing New York through some of our most difficult times, and he’s the right person to keep our state on the road to recovery. George ... you are the top Republican governor in history.”

Moments earlier, Pataki was endorsed by the New Era Democrats--the first time the independent group has endorsed a Republican for statewide office. Other Democrats, including former New York City Mayor Edward I. Koch, former Queens Borough President Claire Shulman, state Sen. Olga Mendez and the Chinatown Democratic Club have already backed Pataki.

The endorsements came a day after Pataki reported to the state Board of Elections that he had nearly $12.2 million for his campaign. His Democratic rival, H. Carl McCall, said he had just over $1.1 million.
