Strong Showing for Bosnian Nationalists
Nationalists made strong gains in Bosnia’s first elections organized without Western help since the end of the 1992-95 war, according to partial preliminary results late Sunday.
The election commission said no races had been decided by Sunday night. Final results of the Saturday vote are expected by Oct. 22.
A Serb nationalist, Mirko Sarovic, looked poised to win the Serb spot on Bosnia’s three-member multiethnic presidency. With 77% of the vote tallied, he’d won 38%.
Dragan Covic of the nationalist Croatian Democratic Union was in the lead for the Croat presidency with 65% of the vote. It was unclear what percentage of ballots had been tallied in that race.
With 69% of ballots counted, Sulejman Tihic lead with 28% in the race for the Muslim post.
