One person was killed and dozens more were injured in scattered violence across the southern state of Guerrero as voters went to the polls to elect 46 state legislators and 76 mayors.

Juan Jose Castro, the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, mayor of the city of Ayutla, said an Indian man with a PRI T-shirt was shot and killed by opposition party supporters as he left a polling place in the nearby town of Cruz Alta.

Police charged a local man with murder, and investigators called a news conference to insist that the killing had nothing to do with politics.
