Alex Rodriguez, an All-Star shortstop with the Texas Rangers, donated $3.9 million to the University of Miami baseball program Thursday.

The gift, paid in annual installments over six years, will be used to renovate the stadium--which will then be called Alex Rodriguez Park.

“It’s something I feel is a responsibility for me,” said Rodriguez, a Miami native. “The city of Miami has done so much for me in my childhood that it makes me feel really great coming back and helping out. This was my Yankee Stadium, my Candlestick Park, my Dodger Stadium.”

The 27-year-old Rodriguez, who signed a record $252 million, 10-year contract in December 2000, also vowed to return to the university and get a degree. Having already taken a few classes at a community college, he hopes to graduate by age 35.

A baseball fan filed a lawsuit against the Chicago Cubs, accusing the team of selling overpriced tickets through a subsidiary that competes with local brokers.

Peter John Cavoto Jr. filed suit against Wrigley Field Premium Ticket Services. His lawsuit claims that the team uses the outlet to sell some $36 tickets for up to $130, without first making them available at face value.

Mark McGuire, executive vice president of business operations for the Cubs, would not comment about the merits of the lawsuit, but said the team was “comfortable with the setup” of the subsidiary.
