Cutting $858 million from state agencies in the face of a $1.5-billion state budget shortfall, Gov. Mark Warner slashed 1,800 state jobs. He warned that more layoffs could come.

State law lets Warner trim as much as 15% from the budget when the Legislature is not in session. Included was a 20% cut in Warner’s $124,855 salary.

The cuts hit higher education and include $46.2 million from the community college system.
