Charles Dennis is gliding with a very familiar partner

Special to The Times

New York-based interdisciplinary artist-choreographer Charles Dennis performs in the flesh and once-removed. In his case, a video image created by a hand-held digital camera is his surrogate. Dennis, co-founder of New York’s long-running experimental space P.S. 122, presented his splendid work, “Mr. Remote,” Thursday at Highways Performance Space. It brought new meaning to martinis, disco music and spending the night solo in front of the tube.

After a hard day, Dennis flicks through the evening’s offerings and, finding nothing, points the camera at himself. Gliding around the floor with the ease of Astaire, Dennis shakes up a martini grande, determinedly boogies with a sly, knowing grin and, with camera strategically placed (a monitor and large screen also serve as companions), the world is seen through a martini glass. When Dennis gets to the olive -- it’s satori.

Cool multiple images, close-ups and other effects ultimately lead to Dennis kissing his image on the rabbit-eared TV, before calling it a night.

His “The Gift -- Version 2.0,” could be the next morning: Dennis wakes up in bed, camera already cranking, before opening a bright red box. Imagine his glee when he discovers a Dennis mini-me, wielding a tiny video camera. Cereal-eating, shaving and more twirling to nifty music ensue. Soon, a bigger box arrives, Dennis puts the doll into his own bed and then he crawls into the box. Fade to black.

Charles Dennis repeats this program tonight at 8:30 at Highways Performance Space, 1651 18th St., Santa Monica. (310) 315-1459. $15.
