Man Gets 7 Years in Theft of Refund Check

A man who pretended to be Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss’ son and tried to cash Buss’ $161,171 state-tax refund check was sentenced Monday to seven years in federal prison.

Dwayne Kellum, 38, of Long Beach pleaded guilty in March to conspiracy and mail fraud.

In July, U.S. District Judge Christina Snyder sentenced his co-defendant, Kenneth Reeves, 42, to two years in prison for conspiracy and mail fraud.
