From Times Wire Reports

The government is stepping up its investigation into the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee because the hoods may open unexpectedly while the vehicles are moving. Nineteen people complained about the problems, but no injuries or accidents were reported.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation covers 262,135 vehicles.

NHTSA began a preliminary inquiry May 17 that covered the 1996-98 Grand Cherokees. The agency found most of the complaints and insurance company claims for the problem were for 1997 models.
