Candidates They Won’t Be Voting For

Re “Latino Caucus Won’t Support Davis Reelection,” Oct. 5: As a Democrat, I was surprised by the quote in The Times by Sen. Richard Polanco (D-Los Angeles) and Assemblyman Marco Firebaugh (D-Los Angeles) stating that they were “unable” to endorse Gray Davis because of the governor’s veto regarding legislation permitting some illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses.

They stated that the “vetoes contradict our Democratic core value of inclusion.” Since when did the Democratic Party openly stand for anything illegal?

Re “Davis for Reelection,” Oct. 15:

I was disappointed to read your recommendations. The general feeling of Californians is neither Gray Davis nor Bill Simon is a good candidate. Both have notoriously poor track records. And yet The Times wants to reward Davis’ multibillion-dollar mistake, purchasing energy contracts at the highest prices during our so-called energy crisis, with another four years. If Davis is so “in tune” with the environment, why did he ignore his election promise to preserve California’s old-growth trees?

Neither candidate has any notable merit to stand on. Neither candidate takes a stand on an issue; instead, both point out each other’s flaws. Neither candidate has any new ideas. Now is the time to consider third-party candidates who offer fresh ideas, such as Peter Camejo, who not only has a successful business record, but also actually has a platform and takes positions on issues.

Re “Campaign Imperfect,” Oct. 14:

When the most populous state goes from a billion-dollar surplus to a multibillion-dollar deficit, there is something wrong with the government. Maybe it is time that Davis starts running ads about his party and what he is going to do to reverse this substantial loss, rather then running ads about Simon. The state of California needs a chance, and as far as I am concerned, anything is better than Davis.
