The Consequences of Illegal Immigration

Re “Father’s Modest Dream Leads to Tragic Journey” (Oct. 23), on illegal immigrants using coyotes: I can sympathize with the families who have lost relatives in the tragic manner described, but this should not result in making the lot easier here for people who have arrived by breaking the laws of this country. It is not fair for people who are trying to immigrate legally.

The Times, it seems, is more interested in getting the business and support of our large Latino population than it is in trying to demonstrate balanced reporting. No nation, no matter how large and wealthy, can indefinitely support the tide of illegal immigration from poorer nations on the present scale without having to face serious social, economic and cultural problems in the future.

Re “The Plight of ‘Illegal Children,’ ” Commentary, Oct. 21:

Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo wants the U.S. to grant amnesty to thousands of children based on her assessment that their plight is the fault of everything except the stupidity, corruption, shortsightedness and inefficiency of the countries from which they come. The solution to the problems of these children lies with changing these countries and not with rewarding illegal entry into this country, which will simply foster more illegal immigration.

Send these mothers home to their children. Penalize the mothers in America who hire these illegals to care for their children. These mothers in America must have neither shame nor honor to be thus involved in illegal immigration. They should pay huge fines.
