They Have IDs, but How About a Dress Code?

Re “Back to School With Photo ID Badges,” Aug. 18:

I was astonished to see the photo of Melissa Sandberg that accompanied this article. Is this what constitutes suitable attire for school? Don’t parents or guardians have the discipline necessary to insist their children wear appropriate clothing to school? They are there to learn, not to be fashion plates.

There is all this uproar about wearing the ID badges because “it ruins my outfit.” Assistant Principal Mick Wager says the badge is “the same thing as a dress code.” Why should the students make that association when it is obvious that there is no “dress code”?

I am a believer in uniforms, dress codes or appearance guidelines. I have no problem with the ID badges, but I think that there is a lot more to be done to protect these students and focus their attention on job No. 1--their education.
